The Singularity
Technology is advancing at such a rapid, exponential rate, it is virtually impossible for a single individual to keep track of all the changes. Indeed, this is one of the effects of humanity’s total immersion in an electronic web, that of the perception of time speeding up. The Web 3.0 is so interactive now, we zip from hyperlink to hyperlink, and before you know it, the entire 24 hour day has passed in the perceived blink of an eye.
Scientists are still investigating the myriad effects of an electronic-interactive social media. Psychologists see a constant-stimulus-response feedback loop; studies have shown people online are constantly checking real-time updates of their email, Facebook, Twitter, and other networking sites. Neuroscientists have discovered that the constant stimulation of being “online” actually stimulates the dopamine receptors in the brain, which are neurotransmitters also triggered by different psychoactive drugs, such as cocaine! The term “electronic drug” takes on a more literal meaning! People are literally getting “high” by being connected to the Internet! Instead of a pure CONsumer, being merely passive, we have become PROsumers, by instantly creating new content or information/data flow while “wired” into the cyber-realm.
In the innovative science fiction film, The Matrix, we see people literally plugged into the virtual world; and just as was evidenced in the film, people today have a hard time distinguishing between what is real and what is an illusion. The multi-player online role playing games, such as Warcraft, trap thousands of minds every day. There was an article in the news of a MMORPG player starving to death, he was so addicted to the virtual reality games! With the recent introduction of 3D holographic technology, it has become even more difficult to discern the real from the unreal. In Japan, the most popular “teeny-bopper” entertainer turned out to be in fact an amalgam of different body types that was portrayed in a 3D hologram! There are more serious issues involved in this reality manipulation, as it introduces the 1984 Big Brother concept; how would we know when our government was lying and manipulating us? Hitler, Stalin, and Mao never had 21st century mind-bending/warping technologies at their disposal!
The Singularity is a theoretical event-horizon (as in a ‘black-hole’) when artificial intelligence (A.I.) becomes greater than human intelligence, or self-aware. Many science fiction shows have explored this theme of a ‘super-intelligence’; some examples are Caprica, Battlestar Galactica (the new version), I,Robot, A.I., and many others. Scientists from all disciplines have produced a high-level report detailing where the “converging technologies” are headed. The Converging Technologies for Improving Human Performance was commissioned by the U.S. National Science Foundation in 2002. It analyzed in-depth the emerging technologies and sciences of nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology, and cognitive science (NBIC), and where to direct them in the advance of the human species.
Some see the Singularity as becoming the single greatest advance of the human being. A whole new field of study has emerged called ‘transhumanism’; it is literally the next stage in human evolution, a Homo sapiens superioris. Others see a danger of humanity becoming “Borg”-like, as in the Star Trek series. A human cybernetic organism, no longer fully human, but something else; and not necessarily better! Another question raised is who will have access to all this advanced technology?
Already there are “resource wars” over depleted natural resources, a cry for saving the environment and needed “depopulation measures”. Will there only be a ruling super-elite of financial oligarchs who will be the New Immortal Human? Will the rest of us live in hive-like cities, under total surveillance and control? These are critical questions that need to be addressed, and soon, in the opening stages of the Not-So-New World Order!
